3/1/2026: Bal Shadi - The Phylactery Bobbitt, The Bread Loaf Transporter, & Go Go Gadget Guillotine
Location(s): Bal Shadi
NPCs: Elgar,
Loot:
Summary:
The baby megalohippus disappears before our eyes (magic used by the other creatures), but its blood remains.
We use Ta’an’s goodly distance mage hand to find the device that Ansel used. It’s about the size of a bread loaf (slightly curved). There’s a focusing crystal on each side. We find runes and script written in infernal, and made of mithril and it’s light. “Cut and take, cut and take, what thou dost sever I shall make into a mighty and hellish abode worthy of legends brave and ballads old.” It’s built with cold forging, metal shaping - mithril that’s been wrapped around whatever was inside with no seams. Paladins of Pelor made weapons like the Heron Spear that have similar white light qualities. One of the weapons, the bident (Pelor’s Radiance), was lost. The metal wrap around the outside is not magic, just metal. Imogen looks through it and it appears to be that it could be the bident cut and bent (but not but through). More powerful, but maybe has fewer uses. Imogen also sees a small wooden box inside, which has symbols of the soul and also a symbol of death (in a language of Aasimar). There’s also a pair of wings engraved on it.
We head back to the Courier’s Union rendezvous.

We arrive back in Bal Shadi. We are paid 26,400gp for the job. We are ready to level up.
We go to Cedwin’s dad’s home - Elgar. He suggests that we go to the librarian (Aldren, formerly leader of Bal Shadi), since the High Cleric (Bronwyn Reese) went to Shaarmid (she’s the one who removed the books about Cyric). Another person is the arcane blacksmith, Caddigan, who has a nice library. Elgar’s necklace (belonged to his father) is a tiny box - a symbol of tiny claws on one side. Phylactery - can store a spirit. Elgar’s father wanted to be brought back when the blight was over.
We go to the Hall of Echoes to talk to Sister Arian, who is with Father Broderick. We tell her about the device we found. Ta’an does Soul Sight and sees an Aasimar spirit. It doesn’t appear damaged or tortured, just old. It could be a way of fooling a weapon so that a user can wield a weapon that isn’t meant for them.
Still need to complete Gate of Amtar - 39 Jathomite spirits. 1 day to get to Velcrun territory, after that 2 days through Velcrun territory. Another 2 days after that. 5 total days.

The Velcrun want to learn how to make Ehlonna’s infusion potions. They would like to send one of their people to Bal Shadi to train when we come back. We can’t send her to Bal Shadi because Kendra has already used her petition on Yareth. We send a message to Yareth in Kholtar instead. Should take 4-5 days to hear back.

We see the forest thinning out to the south and to the west. Through the trees we see a massive stone structure - an archway with a flat top. Inside the archway, there are iron rings on both sides. When you go east through the gate towards Amtar, it’s normal. However, if you go west, you end up with a fortress in front of you. You can only see it after you go through. The illusion is slightly off when we look through vs. around the gate. We send Imogen’s book through to see what’s on the other side. We see what was described in the Brothers of Bal Shadi poem. Initially, we see a view (illusion) that looks similar but much older (trees are younger, etc.). We also see creatures that don’t exist in Amtar that look like they’re guarding the castle. The area looks coastal - like sandy ground, and palm trees. We can almost hear the ocean. The sun appears to be in about the position, maybe a little off. We think it looks farther west and a little farther north. South of the vision is the ocean. It appears to be an island in the center of the Lake of Steam - Arnrock.
